Analyzing underlying metrics of overperforming NHL skaters to maximize trade returns before their production fades.
By Jeff Stacks · December 23, 2025 · Updated October 12, 2026
{"template":"feature","intro":["The fantasy hockey season comes at you fast. You spent time figuring out your draft ranking. You followed preseason games, scouting for injuries and potential powerplay deployments. You went through the draft and got the guys you thought could take you all the way. As games pile up and you're outside of a playoff spot, it's not a good feeling to do all that work and come up with a dud of a fantasy team that constantly disappoints. Just know, there's always a silver lining.","One savvy way to maximize your team is to trade players that have a higher profile for underrated assets and higher draft picks for the following season. Drafting as many times as possible in the earlier rounds does not guarantee a good team, but it gives you more darts to throw at a quickly-dwindling free agent board. These are the picks that can make (or break) your team.","It really depends on where you are in the standings. Say you're on the cusp of a playoff spot. Or, there's a three-way battle for the last spot. These are situations where you don't go selling your superstars for nickels on the dollar (sorry, Canadians don't use pennies anymore).","If you're near the bottom of the league, you have to find an edge somehow. The way I approach sale trades is to take a deep dive into the underlying metrics of my players. I usually look for skaters that are overperforming on the score sheet and have indicators that their production may fade.","One prime example from this season is Tyler Bertuzzi. The toothless stud of the Chicago Blackhawks has 16 goals and 10 assists in 30 games. Mostly playing shotgun to breakout superstar Connor Bedard, Bertuzzi is on pace for 42G-26A-63P in 79 games. This would clear his previous career-high by 10 points. While not the first time a 30-year old player has hit a high-mark, I would hazard a guess his shooting percentage (SH%) of 23.88% is unsustainable. I could be wrong but as you'll see, the underlying numbers are not friendly to Todd's favourite nephew.","Before I get into the players I wanted to clarify a few things about league types, and the differences between Redraft, Keeper and Dynasty leagues.","Redraft leagues are standard on the Yahoo platform. You draft before the NHL season begins. You play your season. You try and make your team better - or worse – at the trade deadline. You trudge through the playoffs. The season ends, you watch the real NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs, and forget about everything that happened in Fantasy. You keep none of your players through the next season, but your standings position will affect your draft position. Simple and tidy.","Keeper leagues are a bit more advanced. Keeper league rules can vary greatly. Some leagues have one keeper, some have 10. Other leagues you can keep your players for only one season; in others you can keep your players for five seasons. I was in a league last year where the rule was you could keep five players your first season. You then had to trade all five away before the next season's deadline, otherwise they would all be lost to free agency. This would leave you with nothing in return. The strategy I employ in these leagues is to try to hang on to my best players as long as possible, and move them for the biggest return I can get.","Dynasty leagues are very hands-on. You draft a team, then keep either the entire team or the majority of players on your roster, for as long as you want. Some Dynasty leagues have a small refresher draft every year for dropping retirees and adding rookies. Most Dynasty league types are long-term holds for players.","The players I'm highlighting for trade should make sense to move in any league type, depending on the return."],"players":[{"id":"nylander","name":"William Nylander","team":"Toronto Maple Leafs","position":"C/RW","rostered":"100%","ppUnit":"PP1","imageUrl":"https://a.espncdn.com/combiner/i?img=/i/headshots/nhl/players/full/3114736.png","description":["Toronto Maple Leafs fans likely don't want to hear this, but it may be time to cancel the parade. While the team is still at a .500 record despite some ugly performances this season, all measurable stats indicate this is not a good team. Auston Matthews is on pace for a measly 35G-23A-58P over 77 games. Neither of their \"star\" goalies from last year can stay healthy. Their Defence core is a broken carousel at best. It's been tough sledding for Toronto's favorite Buds.","One bright spot Leafs' fans have been able to look at is William Nylander. Nylander has always been a good, if not elite Forward in the NHL and in Fantasy Hockey. Always playing third fiddle to Matthews and current Golden Knight Mitch Marner, he's had a chance to shine like he's never had before this season.","Racking up 11G-25A-36P in 31 games, with a pace of 27G-62A-89P, Nylander is having a solid campaign. The start of Willy's year was boiling hot. 15 points in nine October games. 17 points in 12 November games. Nylander was virtually the only reason to watch Leafs games for the first two months.","That production has since dropped significantly. With just four points in his last 10 games since the start of December, Nylander's scorching streak cooled off right after his last missed game on November 28, 2025. Coach Craig Berube cited \"an illness\" for Nylander's absence for that game.","This could be unrelated, but since the illness his shot volume has fallen off completely. Along with a game against the Tampa Bay Lightning on December 8, 2025, and another against the Edmonton Oilers on December 13, 2025 where he put up donuts across his stat line, it may be time to think about moving off Nylander. His underlying metrics also aren't doing him any favours either, which I'll get into shortly.","I had a feeling this was going to happen. I owned Nylander in one league and was excited to reap the benefits of his thrilling production to start the Fantasy Hockey season. Of course, I looked into his numbers and they were not the most encouraging at being sustainable. This triggered me to look for a trade partner.","I'm sure the trade looks like too much at first glance. You may even think I got fleeced. To note, outside the 7th round pick, the picks I traded were all extras I acquired from previous sell-high deals earlier in the year.","I included Roman Josi because I have Zach Werenski, Jacob Chychrun, Seth Jones and Simon Edvinsson comprising my D-Core. Josi was additional point production with lower peripheral production that I could afford to move on from. Like Brady, the Predators Captain was also just coming back from a lengthy injury recovery.","Let's break down this trade by the numbers."],"onIceStats":[{"label":"CF/60","value":"151st","rank":"Low"},{"label":"SF/60","value":"163rd","rank":"Low"},{"label":"xGF/60","value":"73rd","rank":"Mid"},{"label":"SCF/60","value":"111th","rank":"Mid"}],"individualStats":[{"label":"OISH%","value":"14.97%","rank":"High"},{"label":"PDO","value":"1.009","rank":"Low"},{"label":"IPP","value":"76.60%","rank":"Mid"},{"label":"ixG/60","value":"286th","rank":"Low"},{"label":"iCF/60","value":"169th","rank":"Low"},{"label":"iSCF/60","value":"364th","rank":"Low"}],"honorableMentions":[],"tradeAnalysis":[{"name":"The 'Banger' Blockbuster","receive":["Brady Tkachuk","2026 13th Pick","2026 13th Pick","2026 15th Pick"],"give":["William Nylander","Roman Josi","2026 7th Pick","2026 8th Pick","2026 10th Pick"],"analysis":"The stats speak for themselves. Come with me down the rabbit hole; I'll explain. We don't like to admit it, but as humans we all love a good name. We're also influenced by external biases, like sports media and shiny things. I love Cale Makar as a player. I've owned him several times over the past two years.","But can you get equal - or even better value - out of a Makar trade? I would argue yes, and I can back it up.
