Fredrick’s Week 13 MiLB Review

{"template":"baseball-prospect-risers","subtitle":"Featuring Jefferson Rojas, Demetrio Crisantes, Christian Zazueta, Luke Adams, Cam Cannarella, Brady Smith, and more","readTime":"10","intro":"Last weekend was Father’s Day so I took the week off to host my parents at my place and it was great to spend the weekend watching some baseball with my Dad and my son, even if it involved seeing the Cubs blow a lead on Saturday night. It may be a week late but happy father’s day to all the dads out there, I hope you all had a great weekend like I did. Now let’s get back to the real world and look at some minor league baseball.","tiers":[{"id":"tier-1782666496851","label":"% Owned on Fantrax <40%","players":[{"name":"Jefferson Rojas","team":"CHC - AA","position":"2B/SS","age":"21","pctOwned":"27","writeup":"Rojas has been featured multiple times now because he just keeps on hitting. His numbers for the month of June are ridiculous, he’s hitting .370/.406/.652 with 7 homers, 6 steals, and is striking out less than 10% of the time. Super impressive stuff for a guy that just turned 21 two months ago. He slotted in at 66 on my June top 100 list and will almost surely be higher on the next one. "},{"name":"Tommy White","team":"ATH - AAA","position":"3B","age":"23","pctOwned":"22","writeup":"White’s numbers for the season aren’t that impressive but in June he’s hitting .346/.435/.654 with 4 homers and a stolen base. The contact numbers here are very impressive, his 90.8% contact rate is in the ball park of guys like Xavier Edwards, Alex Bregman, and Bobby Witt Jr and his 14.3% K rate reflects that. He’s a free swinger though and I do worry about him chasing at higher levels and it impacting his quality of contact. He also hits too many ground balls which will also limit his power ceiling. Fangraphs compared him to Maikel Franco and I think it really fits. While that may not seem exciting, Franco played in the bigs for years and had multiple 20 plus homer seasons so there’s value in that type of player. \n"},{"name":"Jonathon Long","team":"CHC - AAA","position":"1B","age":"24","pctOwned":"21","writeup":"Long has been great recently, hitting .283/.377/.585 with 3 homers and very good K and BB rates over the last two weeks. Overall though, it’s been a disappointing season for the right hander, who currently has an 89 wRC+ after 73 games in AAA. He was much better last year so it’s hard to say if he’s just slumping or if he’s working through some mechanical changes but he’ll need to do much better as a 1B. The Cubs don’t seem to have much faith in him either so it might take a change of scenery to bring the best out of him. Even then, the ceiling isn’t that high for a 1B without a ton of power so I wouldn’t go out of my way to roster him outside of very deep leagues. \n"},{"name":"Demetrio Crisantes","team":"ARI - AA","position":"2B","age":"21","pctOwned":"21","writeup":"It’s good to see Crisantes healthy and playing well after only playing in 34 games last season and after getting a late start to this one. He’s played 20 AA games and is hitting .333/.436/.577 with 3 homers so far. Playing in one of the most hitter friendly environments in the minors will certainly help his stock and I anticipate his surface numbers to look fantastic while in AA and after promotion to hitter friendly Reno as well. Overall, I’m not a huge fan of the profile. He’s not a very exciting athlete, he’s been hampered by injury, he’s not really that fast despite his history of stealing, and the power isn’t all that big. It feels underwhelming as a whole and he may end up as a regular big leaguer, I’m having a hard time finding much to be excited about for fantasy. \n"}]},{"id":"tier-1782666744788","label":"% Owned on Fantrax <20%","players":[{"name":"Christian Zazueta","team":"LAD - AA","position":"SP","age":"21","pctOwned":"17","writeup":"Zazueta is one of the hottest pitching prospects that isn’t named Kade Anderson right now. With a good fastball, a good changeup, and good command, he’s currently dominating hitters and looked spectacular in his AA debut on Thursday. I have to think that he’ll be on almost all top 100 lists in the near future so get in on him while you still can.\n"},{"name":"Luke Adams","team":"MIL - AAA","position":"1B/3B","age":"22","pctOwned":"15","writeup":"Adams has been on fire this past month, hitting .277/.422/.723 with 8 homers and very good walk and K rates. Adams is a weird prospect to me because he doesn’t whiff too much, has good contact rates, his 113 max EV is good, the numbers just have not been there outside of OBP (which is in part due to a crazy high hit by pitch rate). I think he’ll be a decent big leaguer but it just doesn’t feel like a profile I’d recommend chasing for fantasy. The power ceiling is questionable and average isn’t very exciting. "},{"name":"Alexander Frias","team":"MIL - A","position":"OF","age":"18","pctOwned":"15","writeup":"One of the biggest risers in the past month, Frias demolished the complex league and has already earned a promotion to A ball at just 18.25 years old. The power is massive, we’ve already seen a 117 mph ball come off his bat and the hit tool looks to be solid as well. He’s got a long way to go but it’s a great profile that has massive potential.\n"},{"name":"Henry Lalane","team":"NYY - A","position":"SP","age":"22","pctOwned":"11","writeup":"Lalane threw just 53 innings in the past 3 years and he has already eclipsed that number in this year alone. He finally looks to be healthy and is showing what made him such an interesting prospect all those years ago with a 3.09 ERA in A ball. Now, he’s 22 and pitched at this level before so you’d like to see him do this at a higher level before getting excited, but the results have been good so far. I’ll probably be later than most on him because I just don’t trust his injury history but what he’s done is absolutely notable and I wouldn’t blame anyone that is interested \n"}]},{"id":"tier-1782666748987","label":"% Owned on Fantrax <10%","players":[{"name":"Cam Cannarella","team":"MIA - AA","position":"OF","age":"22","pctOwned":"10","writeup":"If you’re looking at a list of underrated names right now then Cannarella would likely be on it. He dominated A+ ball and has now done the same in AA after 21 games, hitting .374/.448/.585 while walking almost as much as he’s struck out. The only thing you could nit pick right now is his ground ball rate but he’s showing some power and a great hit tool. It’s still easy to doubt his power ceiling but I wouldn’t be surprised if he continues to show more pop than anticipated. I’m cautiously excited. "},{"name":"Hayden Alvarez","team":"LAA - A","position":"OF","age":"19","pctOwned":"10","writeup":"I ranked Alvarez 70th in my top 100 rankings earlier this month and he has done nothing but rake since then. In the month of June he’s hitting .357/.460/.643 with a 16% BB rate and 22% K rate. He’s got all the tools you want, his stats look amazing, he’s athletic and projectable, I honestly can’t believe he’s still just 10% owned. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s promoted to A+ in the next month and if he continues to hit there then we’re looking at a top 25 prospect. "},{"name":"Caden Hunter","team":"BAL - A+","position":"SP","age":"22","pctOwned":"7","writeup":"Hunter has been getting some real hype recently and showed why the other night by walking 3, giving up only 1 hit, and striking out 8K in 5 innings of scoreless ball. The 5th round draft pick out of USC has a good mid 90s fastball with a slider, changeup, and curveball to go with it. It’s a good all around arsenal that is generating lots of whiffs in A+ ball. The walks are a bit of a concern though and he’ll have to reign in that 14% BB rate if he wants to continue to succeed. Still, the stuff is legit and he’ll likely be rising in most rankings over the next few months.\n"}]},{"id":"tier-1782666766123","label":"% Owned On Fantrax <5%","players":[{"name":"Brady Smith","team":"LAD - A","position":"SP","age":"21","pctOwned":"3","writeup":"Smith was drafted in 2023 but only pitched 21 innings before this season so it’s great to see him healthy and throwing well. Thursday night he threw the best outing of his minor league career so far, going 6 innings, striking out 11, while walking none, and only giving up 1 hit. That’s about as dominant as you can get. The fastball looks great and is sitting in the mid 90’s, the changeup is missing a ridiculous amount of bats, and he’s got a good slider and curveball to go with it. The injury history is a problem and we still need to see better command over longer outings but there’s a real prospect here with mid rotation upside. "},{"name":"Brandon White","team":"MIA - AAA","position":"SP","age":"26","pctOwned":"1","writeup":"White had a few rough outings after getting promoted to AAA but seems to have found his groove. His last two starts he’s throwing 12 innings, struck out 18, walked only 1, and given up just 3 hits. He’s mostly a fastball pitcher, the slider is just ok and the changeup isn’t great, so there’s real relief risk here. Still, the command is very good, the fastball is very good, and he’s got the size you want to see at 6’8” so him developing something more a bit late isn’t the craziest idea. He should absolutely be owned in very deep leagues. "},{"name":"Enrique Oropeza","team":"CHC - DSL","position":"OF","age":"17","pctOwned":"1","writeup":"The Cubs might have found a diamond in the rough in Oropeza, signed for just $55K this past international signing period. It’s honestly hard to find too much info about him but it’s hard to argue with what he’s done so far. He’s currently hitting .391/.532/.739 with 3 homers and 3 steals in 15 games so far. He’s been one of the hottest bats so it’s worth keeping an eye on him."},{"name":"Ricardo De La Paz","team":"SDP - DSL","position":"OF","age":"16","pctOwned":"1","writeup":"At just 16 years old, De La Paz is already 6’4” and 220 pounds and has been one of the best hitters in the DSL. He’s currently hitting .375/.596/.563 while walking 34.6% rate and striking out just 19.2% of the time. DSL pitching is all over the place so it’s hard to really judge hitters but doing what he is doing at his age is notable and I’ve added him in my deepest leagues. \n"}]}]}
