Thunder lose Chet Holmgren 8-10 weeks to patellar tendon tear

Chet Holmgren cannot play. The Oklahoma City Thunder announced Friday that Holmgren underwent a biological treatment to address a small patellar tendon tear in his right knee and will miss eight to 10 weeks. He joins Jalen Williams (fractured fibula, dislocated left ankle) and Cason Wallace (torn labrum in left shoulder), who both underwent surgery this week and will be re-evaluated before the end of the regular season.

Holmgren was the Thunder's rim protector and a top-20 fantasy asset before the injury, projected for 36.9 fantasy points a game in default points scoring with elite blocks and strong category contributions across the board. Williams and Wallace were also rostered players offering fantasy value. All three are out indefinitely, and the Thunder have no games left this week.

Chet Holmgren

Holmgren averaged 17.1 points, 8.9 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 0.6 steals, 1.9 blocks and 1.3 threes on 55.7 per cent shooting in 28.9 minutes a game last season over 69 games, earning first-team All-Defensive and third-team All-NBA honours. His 17.3 per cent usage rate at 55.8 per cent true shooting supported efficient production. He ranked 20th overall with a Roundup Score of 88 and was a fixture in nine-category leagues, where his 3.73 value reflected his blocks and percentages.

The Thunder said Holmgren experienced mild discomfort in his right knee Sunday, the same day Williams and Wallace were hurt. Specialists recommended the procedure to address what the team called a small tear. The eight-to-10-week timeline removes him from fantasy lineups for the foreseeable future. He does nothing for a fantasy team until he is cleared to return.

Jalen Williams

Williams cannot play after undergoing surgery Wednesday to address a fractured left fibula and reconstruction of ankle ligaments. He will be re-evaluated before the end of the regular season but has been listed with a season designation. Last season over 33 games he averaged 17.1 points, 4.6 rebounds, 5.5 assists, 1.2 steals, 0.3 blocks and 0.7 threes in 28.4 minutes a game. His 20.8 per cent usage rate at 47.2 per cent true shooting supported a projection of 34.2 fantasy points.

Williams ranked 196th overall with a Roundup Score of 50, a useful asset in deeper leagues but not a must-hold in standard formats. His injury, sustained in Sunday's win over the LA Clippers, removes him from all fantasy consideration for months. He does nothing for a fantasy lineup until he is cleared to return.

Cason Wallace

Wallace cannot play after undergoing surgery Friday to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder. He will be re-evaluated before the end of the regular season but carries a season designation. Last season over 77 games he averaged 8.6 points, 3.1 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.9 steals, 0.4 blocks and 1.3 threes in 26.6 minutes a game. His 19.8 per cent usage rate at 47.5 per cent true shooting supported a projection of 15.2 fantasy points.

Wallace ranked 296th overall with a Roundup Score of 35, making him a deep-league option rather than a standard-league hold. His injury, also sustained Sunday against the Clippers, removes him from fantasy rosters for the remainder of the regular season. He does nothing for a fantasy lineup until he is cleared to return.

What to do

• Drop Holmgren in leagues without an injured-reserve slot, as his eight-to-10-week absence removes him from all lineups.

• Drop Williams and Wallace in standard leagues, as both face timelines extending into the regular season's final weeks at best.

• Monitor the Thunder's rotation for replacements, though the team has not yet named who will absorb the vacated minutes.
